Can You Drink Tap Water in Yerevan and the Regions of Armenia?

Tap water in Yerevan by district: chlorine, hardness, summer outages, water in the regions, filters and bottled water. What to do if the water is cloudy.

Can You Drink Tap Water in Yerevan and the Regions of Armenia?

People in Yerevan drink tap water without a second thought, and guidebooks claim that almost all of it comes from springs. For a tourist, that is enough. If you live here, cook with this water and use it to make baby formula, it helps to know the details: who tests it, how the districts differ and why in summer you sometimes need to keep a supply at home.

The short answer for Yerevan

Yes, people drink tap water in Yerevan. It is mostly spring water and is always chlorinated. In 2019 the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the country's water met international standards on bacteriological indicators. A 2023 test carried out independently of the authorities took samples in all twelve districts and found no microbiological violations.

There is one weak spot: regular test results for specific addresses are not publicly available.

Who supplies and who monitors the water

Where the chlorine smell comes from

The water is chlorinated at 116 chlorination stations, and the norms require 0.3-0.5 mg of free chlorine per litre at the station outlet. The smell means disinfection is working. It is easy to get rid of: a filter jug with a carbon cartridge, or letting the water stand in an open container.

How the districts differ

There is no difference in microbiology, but there is a big one in hardness. Data from an independent analysis in September 2023, one sample per district:

DistrictHardness, mmol/l
Nubarashen1.33
Kanaker-Zeytun1.4
Shengavit1.48
Nor Nork1.55
Kentron1.55
Avan1.56
Nork-Marash1.6
Arabkir2.3
Achapnyak2.55
Malatia-Sebastia2.64
Davtashen2.68
Erebuni6.9

The standard is 7. In most districts the water is soft or moderately hard, while Davtashen and Malatia-Sebastia are closer to the hard threshold. Erebuni stands out: hardness is almost at the limit, and mineralization in the sample was 787 mg/l against a standard of 1,000. You notice it both in the taste and in the limescale on the kettle, taps and washing machine.

One more detail when choosing housing: Nor Nork, Nork-Marash and Kanaker-Zeytun are supplied from the same water main, Katnaghbyur, and are the first to lose water in summer. If you rent in these districts, ask the landlord about the summer supply schedule before signing. More on the districts in our guides to Nork-Marash and Zeytun, and on prices in our rent price guide.

Why there are outages in summer

There is less water and more consumers: according to the operator, Yerevan's springs produced about 24% less water in 2023 than in 2013. In addition, the contract does not require round-the-clock supply: the target for Yerevan is an average of 23 hours a day.

Summer 2026 showed clearly what this looks like in practice: on 1 July the operator announced that until mid-September many addresses would receive water from 7 a.m. to midnight, and two days later the Water Committee and the company announced that Yerevan would stay on its previous schedule. The practical conclusion: for the summer, keep a couple of 19-litre bottles and some water for household use at home.

Water in the regions

The picture there is uneven. In the Ararat Valley the water comes from wells and is hard and mineralized. In many towns it is supplied by the hour. Here is an extract from Veolia Jur's official schedule for 2025 (no fresh 2026 schedule for the regions is publicly available):

TownWater supply under the 2025 schedule
TsaghkadzorResidential areas 7:00-24:00, upper Makravan 7:00-10:00 and 19:00-24:00
HrazdanCentre round the clock, most neighbourhoods 7:00-24:00
GyumriMost of the town 7:00-19:00, some areas round the clock
VanadzorAlmost everywhere round the clock, some streets 9-17 hours a day
DilijanFrom 15 June to 16 October 16:00-24:00, the rest of the year 7:00-24:00
SevanMost of the town 7:00-24:00
AbovyanAlmost everywhere round the clock

If you are choosing where to live outside the capital, the water schedule is as important an argument as the rent. You can check the schedule for your address with the operator on 1-85.

In 2026 there were two serious cases outside Yerevan. In the town of Byureghavan (16 km from Yerevan), an intestinal infection broke out three times in four months, and coliform bacteria were found in water samples in April. In September, mercury was found in the water in the village of Tsav in Syunik, and residents were advised to drink delivered or bottled water. In July the Water Committee announced an independent audit of the operator's work. These cases do not directly concern Yerevan, but they show that a general verdict of "the water is safe" does not mean the same quality at every tap.

This is a guide based on test data, not an official recommendation. Replace the cartridge on the schedule in the instructions rather than waiting until the water tastes bad. Water and other utility costs are covered in our article on utility bills in Yerevan in 2026.

Water for a baby

There are no Armenian recommendations on water for children under one year. The WHO rule for formula is the same for any water: boil it and mix the formula before the water cools below 70 degrees, because the dry powder is not sterile. Which water to give your baby and from what age unboiled water is fine is for the pediatrician to decide. The mineral waters Jermuk and Bjni are highly mineralized and are usually not used for formula.

Bottled water: what it costs

For everyday drinking people use spring or purified water, and mineral water usually in courses. Prices for 19-litre bottles are without delivery.

If the water is cloudy or smells odd

1. Do not drink it or cook with it. 2. Run the water for a few minutes, especially after an outage: the first water after a break is often rusty. 3. Ask your neighbours: if everyone's water is cloudy, the problem is in the network, not in your pipes. 4. Call Veolia Jur on 1-85: they take a sample in response to a complaint. If the answer does not satisfy you, you can contact the Health and Labor Inspection Body. 5. Switch to bottled water until you get an answer.

Outdoors you can drink from the city's drinking fountains, the pulpulaks, which carry the same tap water.

Frequently asked questions

Who supplies water in Yerevan and where does it come from? Since 1 January 2017, water supply in Yerevan has been handled by Veolia Jur, a subsidiary of the French company Veolia. The sources are the springs of Arzni, Garni, Aparan, Gyumush, Arzakan, Katnaghbyur and others; Lake Sevan is not among them.

Which district of Yerevan has the hardest water? Erebuni: according to an independent analysis in September 2023, hardness was 6.9 mmol/l against a standard of 7, and mineralization was 787 mg/l. In most districts the water is soft or moderately hard.

Why are there water outages in Yerevan in summer? Yerevan's springs produced about 24 percent less water in 2023 than in 2013, and the contract does not require round-the-clock supply: the target is an average of 23 hours a day. It is worth keeping a supply of water at home for the summer.

What water filter do you need in Yerevan? In most districts a jug with a carbon cartridge is enough; it removes the chlorine smell. In Erebuni, because of hardness and limescale, a softener or reverse osmosis is a better fit, and in an accident or with cloudy water it is better to switch to bottled water.

What should you do if tap water in Yerevan is cloudy or smells odd? Do not drink it, run the water for a few minutes and ask your neighbours whether theirs is cloudy too. Then call Veolia Jur on 1-85, where they take a sample in response to a complaint, and use bottled water until you get an answer.
