Delayed on Yerevan-Vienna: what EU261 gives you

Austrian Airlines is an EU carrier, so EU Regulation 261/2004 covers this route both ways. Here is the amount, the exceptions and what to do while you are still at the airport.

Why both directions are covered

EU Regulation 261/2004 applies to every flight departing from an EU airport, and to flights arriving in the EU when an EU airline operates them. Austrian is an EU airline, so as of 22.10.2026 the picture is:

Vienna to Yerevan

Departure from the EU: covered on any airline.

Yerevan to Vienna

Arrival in the EU on an EU carrier: covered as well.

The catch on the Yerevan leg

EU rules do not apply if you already received compensation, rerouting or assistance for the same trip under the law of the departure country.

Flying someone else?

Arriving in the EU on a non-EU airline is not covered. Check who operates the flight, not just who sold the ticket.

FAQ

Am I entitled to compensation on Yerevan-Vienna?

Yes, if Austrian Airlines operates the flight, you arrived 3+ hours late and the cause was not extraordinary circumstances. EU rules apply both ways.

How much is it?

€400: about 2,375 km falls into the 1,500-3,500 km band. If you were rerouted and arrived within the thresholds, it may be halved.

Does departure or arrival delay count?

Arrival at your final destination. A 4-hour late departure with an arrival less than 3 hours late gives no compensation.

What if the plane had a technical fault?

Most technical faults are not extraordinary circumstances, but the airline will argue the cause and the outcome is not guaranteed.

What does AirHelp charge?

35% of the compensation including VAT, only if successful. Another 15% if court action is needed, up to 50% in total.
