Which flights from Yerevan EU261 covers, and which it does not

People often treat the EU compensation rules as universal, but from Yerevan they only work on some routes. We went through 9 routes Yerevan residents fly and marked plainly where there will be no payout.

How EU261 works

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 covers every flight departing from an EU airport on any airline. Flights arriving in the EU from outside are covered only when an EU airline operates them. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are included.

DistanceAmount for late arrival
up to 1,500 km€250 from 3 hours
1,500-3,500 km€400 from 3 hours
over 3,500 km, between the EU and a non-EU country€300 for 3-4 hours, €600 from 4 hours

On flights from outside the EU, EU rules do not apply if you already received compensation, rerouting or assistance for the same trip under that country's law. In every case there is no compensation for extraordinary circumstances, and payment is never guaranteed.

Yerevan to Dubai (flydubai)not coveredNeither end is in the EU, and flydubai is not an EU airline. UAE rules were not checked.
Yerevan to Vienna (Austrian Airlines)covered both waysAustrian is an EU airline. About 2,375 km: €400 for 3+ hours late.

Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Europe (Wizz Air)to Europe Georgian rules, from Europe EU261From Europe it departs the EU. Towards Europe EU261 also applies if an EU-licensed Wizz Air company operates it: check "operated by".
Moscow to Phuket (Aeroflot)outbound not covered, return under Thai rulesThai Regulation 101 only covers departures from Thailand. AirHelp does not currently handle Thai claims.
Phuket via Dubai or Dohadepends on where the trip startedIf a single booking started in the EU, EU261 applies. If it started in Yerevan or Moscow, it does not.

Distances are approximate. Moscow-Batumi (about 1,625 km) and Yerevan-Paris (about 3,410 km) sit close to the 1,500 and 3,500 km thresholds, so the final amount may differ.

What about Armenian rules

We did not find Armenian national rules with fixed delay payouts, but we cannot say they do not exist. The EU-Armenia Common Aviation Area Agreement (signed 15.11.2021) includes Regulation 261/2004 in its consumer protection annex, and the parties commit to aligning their laws. Whether Armenia has actually adopted these rules is not confirmed. So on flights from Yerevan with non-EU airlines, do not count on European amounts.

Russian flights: Air Code art. 120 and FAP-82

Flights by Russian airlines from Russia are not covered by EU261. Russian rules apply to them; whether they apply to international flights such as Moscow-Yerevan has not been verified.

We do not offer AirHelp for these flights, as the applicable rules are not confirmed. AirHelp+ insurance payouts do not cover flights to or from Russia.

How to check your flight

  1. Look at who operates the flight, not only who sold the ticket: it decides EU261 on arrivals into the EU.
  2. Measure the delay at arrival at your final destination, not at departure.
  3. Keep receipts for anything you paid for while waiting.
  4. If your flight falls under EU261, you can claim yourself or through AirHelp: 35% fee incl. VAT only if successful, another 15% for court action. Outside EU261 and UK 261 AirHelp decides case by case.
