Wizz Air between Georgia and Europe: which rules protect you

If you fly a low-cost carrier via Kutaisi to Batumi and back to Europe, this one is for you. The good news is that these flights almost always come under some compensation rules. Which ones depends on the direction and on which Wizz Air company operates the flight.

How Georgian rules differ from EU rules

Strikes

Georgian rules list strikes as extraordinary circumstances. Under EU rules, strikes by the airline's own staff usually do not count.

Hotel

Georgian rules give a hotel and transfer if departure moves by at least 24 hours. EU rules give one if you need to stay overnight.

Refund

Georgian rules explicitly allow a fare refund for delays of 5 hours or more.

Payment

Under Georgian rules, in euros, in cash or by bank transfer.

What to do

  1. Check "operated by" and the direction on your ticket.
  2. Note your actual arrival time: both systems measure the delay at arrival.
  3. Keep receipts for food and a hotel if you paid yourself.
  4. If your flight falls under EU261, you can claim through AirHelp. Whether AirHelp takes Georgian-rules claims has not been verified; outside EU261 and UK261 it decides case by case.
  5. The court deadline under EU261 depends on the country. According to AirHelp, in Germany it is 3 years, ending on the last day of the third year.

FAQ

Georgian rules apply either way. EU261 is added if an EU-licensed Wizz Air company operates it: check "operated by".

Expected €400 for arriving 3+ hours late: about 2,440 km falls into the 1,500-3,500 km band in both systems.

Can the airline refuse because of a strike?

Under Georgian rules, yes. Under EU rules, strikes by the airline's own staff usually do not count as extraordinary.

Will AirHelp take a claim under Georgian rules?

Not verified. We can only speak with confidence about flights under EU261.
