Apostille in Armenia 2026: Fees, Where to Get It, Translation
By WSE.AM editorial team, edited by Mark Muzyka · Updated 23 October 2026
Armenia accepts apostilled documents. Armenian papers: 7,000 AMD, 1 working day at the Ministry of Justice. Foreign papers: apostille at home, then translate.
Armenia has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 14 August 1994, so documents from other member countries are accepted with an apostille instead of consular legalisation. Armenian documents are apostilled by the Ministry of Justice for 7,000 AMD within 1 working day (criminal record certificates by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Foreign documents cannot be apostilled in Armenia: you get the apostille in the country that issued them and then have them translated into Armenian.
Up to date as of 23 October 2026. This is not legal advice: laws change, check the source or a lawyer before acting.
Is Armenia part of the Apostille Convention?
Yes. The Convention of 5 October 1961 abolishes consular legalisation between member states and replaces it with a single certificate, the apostille. Armenia joined on 19 November 1993 and the Convention has applied to it since 14 August 1994.
Under Armenian domestic law (Government Decision N 286-N of 24 March 2011), documents issued by foreign authorities must be legalised, except documents from states that are parties to the Hague Convention: for those an apostille is enough. If your country is not on the list, the document needs consular legalisation instead. The current list of member states is the HCCH status table linked in the sources.
Armenia has two competent authorities for apostilles: the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Apostille on Armenian documents
If you received a document in Armenia (a marriage or birth certificate, a diploma from an Armenian university) and need it abroad, this is the procedure:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who issues the apostille | Ministry of Justice of Armenia, Yerevan, 3/8 Vazgen Sargsyan Street |
| Exception | Certificates of criminal prosecution, wanted status or no criminal record are apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs |
| Fee | 7,000 AMD |
| Processing time | 1 working day: you collect the document at the Ministry of Justice the next day between 16:00 and 17:00 |
| Verification | An electronic apostille can be checked on e-verify.am |
| Which documents | Only official documents issued in Armenia |
The service page is published on the government portal hartak.am.
E-apostille: how to verify an Armenian apostille
Armenia issues electronic apostilles, and their authenticity is checked on e-verify.am. This is the place to send a foreign bank, university or registry office that wants to confirm an Armenian apostille is genuine.
Foreign documents: get the apostille at home
Only documents issued in Armenia can be apostilled in Armenia. A birth certificate, diploma or police certificate from India, Iran, the US, an EU country or anywhere else must be apostilled in the country that issued it, before you move or through someone acting for you there.
Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states in its citizenship section that documents from foreign authorities (civil registry certificates, certificates, notarial documents, translations) must carry consular legalisation or an apostille, and only then be translated into Armenian. The order matters: apostille first, translation second. This is also the route for members of the Armenian diaspora collecting papers for Armenian citizenship.
A note for documents from CIS countries such as Russia: the government decision on citizenship cases and Armenia's answer to the HCCH add the caveat "unless an international treaty provides otherwise", and Armenia is a party to the 1993 Minsk Convention, which usually removes legalisation. We found no official Armenian confirmation of this practice, and the Foreign Ministry asks for an apostille without exceptions. Check with the authority that will receive the document, and if you cannot, get the apostille.
Translation into Armenian
Almost every foreign document for an Armenian authority has to be translated into Armenian. The requirements depend on the procedure.
| Procedure | What is required |
|---|---|
| Residence permit | Passport, a copy of it and a notarised Armenian translation of the passport |
| Citizenship | A translation by a translator who passed the qualification check under Government Decision N 193 of 2 March 2002, or a translation made abroad and certified with an apostille or legalisation, unless a treaty provides otherwise |
| Apostilled documents for citizenship | Apostille or legalisation first, then the translation |
The notarised passport translation is useful beyond the residence permit, for example for the public service (social) number. The state duty for a notary certifying a translation is 500 AMD per page, plus the translator's and notary's own fees; see how much a notary costs in Armenia. For the residence permit itself, read Armenian residence permit: types and documents.
Short checklist before you move
1. List the documents you will need in Armenia: birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, police certificates. 2. Apostille them in the issuing country (or legalise them if that country is not a Convention member). 3. In Armenia, have them translated into Armenian according to the rules of your procedure. 4. Armenian documents you need abroad: apostille at the Ministry of Justice, criminal record certificates at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
