The Asia-Pacific plan: when it makes sense
Yesim sells an Asia-Pacific regional plan covering 15 countries. For Sri Lanka alone it loses on every count:
- there are no 1 GB or 3 GB plans; the smallest is 5 GB for $12;
- 20 GB costs $35.76 against $26.40 for the country plan, $9.36 more;
- 30 GB costs $45.60 against $33.60, a $12 gap;
- the regional page does not list the 15 countries in text, so check the list with Yesim before buying.
If the whole trip is in Sri Lanka, take the country plan. Only look at the regional one if you are travelling through several Asian countries and have confirmed they are all covered.
How much for a holiday
A week by the sea
Maps, taxis and messaging: 1 GB for $3 or 3 GB for $7.92. The $4.20 1-day rate costs more than 1 GB for 30 days.
Two weeks of photos and video calls home
Video calls use data fastest: look at 10 GB for $19.20.
Travelling as a couple
Two or more eSIMs get a 10% discount. One QR code installs on one phone only, so each of you needs your own eSIM.
Limits and payment
- Data only: no calls, no SMS and no local number. You will call through messaging apps, and where a local number is required the eSIM will not help.
- You have 180 days after purchase to activate it, and the plan period starts when your phone first connects to the network.
- No ID check. One QR code installs on one phone.
- To check eSIM support, dial *#06#: the reply should include an EID line.
- yesim.app accepts Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and UnionPay.
- Promo code travelpayouts24 gives new users 3 EUR off, under the affiliate programme terms.
